For Christos Harisopoulos, this statement couldn’t be more true. For those who have known me for years or for those meeting me for the first time, my story is one of unwavering resilience, relentless creativity, and a steadfast commitment to never giving up, no matter the odds.
From a Promising Career to a Challenging Diagnosis
Back in 2019, my life took an unexpected turn when I received what I initially believed to be a life-altering diagnosis of large intestinal cancer. Several doctors, a specialist, and nearly one hundred tests and a biopsy later, the initial diagnosis was thankfully overturned. However, by that time, the upheaval had already caused me to leave the best job I ever held at NBN, leaving me in search of a new beginning just as the world was about to be hit by a global pandemic.
The timing couldn’t have been more unfortunate. Just as I was ready to reenter the workforce, COVID-19 hit, and the job market all but ground to a halt. The challenges that followed were immense. Opportunities were few and far between, and for someone like me who thrives on being part of a team, contributing to the success of an organisation, and feeling the camaraderie that comes with it, the lack of a wage-paying job was particularly disheartening.
Keeping the Flame of Creativity Alive
But I’ve never been one to sit idle. When the world shut down, I turned to my creative instincts to keep myself busy and productive. I poured my energy into running two 'Print On Demand' online stores, where I’ve created over 550 original illustrated and digital designs. Each design is a reflection of my passion for art, my eye for detail, and my ability to connect with people through visual storytelling.
Simultaneously, I channeled my thoughts and observations into writing news and satirical political articles on Substack. My articles have resonated with a dedicated readership, bringing a blend of humor, insight, and a keen understanding of the political landscape to my audience. It’s a platform where I’ve been able to entertain, inform, and provoke thought—proving that even in the face of adversity, my voice remains strong and my mind sharp.
Music has always been a part of my soul, so naturally, I didn’t let that passion go to waste either. Writing and singing songs has been another outlet, one that has allowed me to connect with people on an emotional level and bring some light-heartedness to our collective experience. It’s been a joy to entertain my loyal followers on social media, reminding them—and myself—that even in tough times, creativity can thrive.
The Relentless Job Search
Despite all these endeavors, nothing beats the fulfillment of having a wage-paying job. The structure, the purpose, and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a team are irreplaceable. That’s why I’ve never stopped applying for jobs, sometimes shooting off up to 15 applications in a single day. I’ve been relentless in my pursuit of work, from applying to roles stacking shelves at Dan Murphy’s to seeking positions in call centers across various companies. The search has been challenging, but my determination has never wavered.
I’ve faced rejection, uncertainty, and the emotional toll of an unrelenting job market, but I have never lost hope. I know that I have a wealth of skills and experiences to offer—skills that have been honed through years of hard work, creative exploration, and a genuine desire to contribute to the success of a company.
